Star Indian pacer, Mohammed Shami, is currently grappling with an ankle condition that requires medical attention, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has marked Shami's name in the Test squad with a star, stating that his participation is contingent on his fitness.

While the nature of Shami's injury remains undisclosed, sources indicate that the fast bowler consulted a sports orthopedic in Mumbai to assess the ankle issue, as reported by news agent PTI. A BCCI insider, speaking on anonymity, told news agency PTI: "It is not exactly an on-field injury. It is an ankle condition that has developed. Shami came to Mumbai to consult the doctors. He will also go to NCA for rehab and recuperation work."

Shami, a vital part of India's recent ODI World Cup campaign, played a crucial role, securing 24 wickets in seven games. His absence in the initial matches was due to team composition requirements, and he only entered the playing XI after Hardik Pandya's injury.

The BCCI source assured that Shami's selection in the Test squad implies optimism about his recovery for the Boxing Day Test, adding, "The national selectors wouldn't have selected him had there not been a chance of him getting fit in time for the Boxing Day Test."

It remains uncertain whether Shami will participate in the intra-squad match between India Seniors and India A squads, serving as a prelude to the Test series.

Additionally, Shami is expected to sit out white-ball games for the time being, with a focus on the seven upcoming Test matches, including a series against England at home. His performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will likely influence his participation in the T20 World Cup next year.
