Preparations for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 are in full swing, with a particular focus on the newly announced player retention rules.

In IPL 2025, franchises will have the option to retain up to maximum six players, which can include both capped and uncapped players. Each franchise can retain a maximum of five capped players and maximum of two uncapped players.

The teams will also have the option to use Right to Match (RTM) card, which will help teams in solidifying their core lineup and influence movement of key players.

As reported by Cricbuzz, franchises must submit their final retention list by 5 PM IST on October 31. If any uncapped player makes their debut for the Indian team during this period, they will be classified as a capped player, resulting in a change to their retention category.

"It may be noted that for retention purposes, any player who gets capped on or before October 31, 2024, will be considered a capped player."

How much amount will have to be spent for retention?

Franchises will need to take their purse value into account when retaining players. For the IPL 2025 season, teams are required to spend ₹75 crore from a total purse of ₹120 crore to retain five capped players.
