Known as the 'Bible of Cricket', Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, a cricket reference book published annually in the United Kingdom has named two Indians - Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma - in the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for the 2022 edition.
Jasprit Bumrah, Devon Conway, Ollie Robinson, Rohit Sharma and Dane van Niekerk are the five players named Wisden Cricketers of the Year in the 2022 Wisden Almanack. It is for the very first time that two Indians are named on the list.
On the other hand, Joe Root has been named the Leading Man Cricketer in the World, and South Africa’s Lizelle Lee has been awarded Leading Woman Cricketer in the World. Pakistan's Mohammed Rizwan has been named the Leading T20 Cricketer in the World.
Joe Root's 1,708 Test runs in the past year are the third most in history.
Talking about Bumrah's achievements and the reason behind his selection, Wisden wrote, "Contributing with both bat and ball in India’s historic win at Lord’s, he also produced a match-winning spell of bowling at The Oval. The latter gave India a 2-1 lead in the series that is to be concluded in July this year."
Similarly for Rohit, Wisden wrote, "Rohit was rewarded for his exceptional summer at the top of the order for India, scoring 368 runs in four Tests at an average of 52.57. The highlight came at The Oval, where he scored a match defining 127, his first Test century away from home."
Dane van Niekerk is the only woman cricketer in the top 5 cricketers of the year.
