Young India wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan is expected to miss the opening match of the Duleep Trophy 2024 due to an injury as per a report. Kishan's availability for the later stages of the four-day first-class cricket tournament is currently uncertain. Kishan is a member of Team D, led by Shreyas Iyer, in this year’s tournament and was expected to feature in the team’s first match against Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India C, on September 5 in Anantapur.

While the exact reason for Kishan's potential withdrawal is unclear, a Cricbuzz report suggests that the left-hander may be dealing with an injury.

Recently, Kishan also participated in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament in Tamil Nadu. The left-hander impressed with a powerful century against Madhya Pradesh and remained unbeaten on 41 in the second innings, guiding his team to victory. However, in the following match against Hyderabad, Kishan struggled, recording two single-digit scores.

Samson Could Be Names As Kishan's Replacement

Sanju Samson, who is the captain of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) Rajasthan-based franchise Rajasthan Royals, is likely to replace wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan in the India D squad, as per the Cricbuzz report. Samson, who is yet to make a Test debut, was initially not included in any of the squads for the four-team competition and may now be named in Team D for their opening match against Team A at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur.

The competition features four teams, each set to play three four-day matches, with the first round beginning on September 5. The first round of the Duleep Trophy will take place in Anantapur and Bengaluru. This will be the only opportunity to see some of India’s top Test players, including Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav, before they prepare for India’s Test season, which kicks off against Bangladesh in Chennai on September 19.
