Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the IPL 2020 season after beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 49 runs in the fifth match of the 2020 IPL played at Abu Dhabi on September 23.


The defending champions secured a massive 49-run win over 2-time winners KKR riding high on a whirlwind 80-run knock by their skipper Rohit Sharma and a disciplined bowling effort by their seam bowling attack.

Put into bat first by KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik, Mumbai Indians posted a daunting 195-run total as skipper Rohit Sharma scored his maiden half ton of the season and was assisted by contributions by Suryakumar Yadav and Saurabh Tiwari.

Mumbai who lost opener Quinton De Kock early to KKR medium pacer Shivam Mavi counter attacked with Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav taking on the KKR seamers in the powerplay and striking boundaries to get them off to a flier.

Rohit-Surya duo were severe on KKR seamer Pat Cummins and Sandeep Warrier ..Rohit struck 6 massive sixes and got to the 200-six milestone in his IPL career. Saurabh Tiwary, Hardik Pandya and scored some quick fire runs towards the end to propel the team to a mammoth 195-run total.

Chasing a herculean 196 target, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a nightmarish start as they lost both openers Shubman Gill (7) and Sunil Narine (9) cheaply to Mumbai pacers Trent Boult and James Pattinson.

Skipper Dinesh Karthik promoted himself to No.3 in the batting order and stitched a partnership with Nitish Rana to rebuild the innings but both of them could not catch onto starts. While Karthik was trapped leg before by spinner Rahul Chahar, Rana was dismissed by all-rounder Keiron Pollard.

MI pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah struck a lethal blow by dismissing hard hitting Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan in quick succession and ending any hopes for KKR to make attempt at the chase. Boult came back strongly to dismiss Nikhil Naik for 1, spinner Chahar picked up his second of the night by getting Shivam Mavi stumped off

However, Mumbai bowlers stuck to a tight line all through the match and squeezed the run flow through the middle overs to make the task look impossible.Pat Cummins who had a forgetul day with the ball Australia made some amends with the bat scoring a blistering 12-ball 33 cameo.
