Background
IND vs WI, 1st Test LIVE: The Indian men's cricket team will be back in action with the first Test match against West Indies scheduled to get underway at the Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica on July 12. The Men in Blue have enjoyed a rare month-long break after their loss in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Oval in London. The Rohit Sharma-led side would be eager to get back on to the park.
In a way, this will be a series in which both the sides would be looking to sort things for a better future. Captain Rohit has already confirmed his new opening partner who will be a 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal. Whatever said and done, India are looking at a transition period with their senior cricketers ageing and the young crop of players waiting for their chances. Skipper Rohit is 36, Virat Kohli will turn 35 in November this year while Ajinkya Rahane too is 35. Cheteshwar Pujara, 35, too has already been shown the exit door and it would be interesting to see if he is able to find his way back into the side with the selectors gradually looking to give youngsters a place.
In the bowling department too, Ravichandran Ashwin is 36 and Ravindra Jadeja is 34-year-old. In all likelihood, many of these players might not be around at the highest level of the sport three-four years down the lane which is why it would be a series in which the selectors and management would want to have a look at some of the youngsters.
On the other hand, West Indies too would be looking to play a better brand of cricket especially after the two-time World Champions failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup later in India but it wouldn't an easy thing especially against India, a team they haven't beaten in a Test series since April 2002. Rahkeem Conrwall could likely earn a place in the XI while their top-order comprising of Kraigg Brathwaite Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Raymon Reifer would hold the key for them.
