Sri Lanka were asked to bat-in first, as Suryakumar Yadav won the coin toss, and the hosts were off to a decent start. However, just like the first T20I, the top order delivered the goods for the Lankan Lions, and their middle and lower order choked the momentum, as Sri Lanka was reduced from 130/2 in 15 overs, to 161/9 in 20 overs.
The Indian bowlers conceded merely 31 runs in the death overs, and managed to scalp 7 wickets, as the hosts failed to register an above-par total at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
In reply, the Indian innings saw some stoppages, as the match was paused due to rain. Soon after the rain was stopped and covers were taken off, the umpires inspected the ground, and cut-off of overs took place. The final decision was India needed 72 runs in 45 balls for the win, as a target of 78 was set for the visitors in 8 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav's side chased down the target inside 6.3 overs, as quickfire cameos from the skipper, and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal eliminated any chances of comeback from the hosts, and the winning runs were sealed by all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
