IND vs WI 1st ODI Live Streaming: Shikhar Dhawan, in the absence of Rohit Sharma, will be leading the Indian side against the West Indies in the first ODI
IND vs WI 1st ODI Live Streaming: India tours West Indies for a three-match ODI series and five-match T20I series. The tour starts off with ODI to be played on Friday, July 22. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan will be leading the side as India look to carry a good run of form ahead of T20 World Cup later this year.
The Indian side is coming off an impressive T20I and ODI series victory over England (both won 2-1). Whereas, West Indies are going through a terrible run of form, as Bangladesh visited them earlier this month and thumped the Windies with a 3-0 whitewash in the ODI series. West Indies have lost 6 ODIs in a row and have the worst win-loss ratio in ODI’s this year
India has rested Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, while KL Rahul, who is on the recovery path after hernia surgery, contracted COVID-19.
With the big names out, the tournament sits in perfectly for all the backup players to make their name, and it won’t just be a one-off game for them but rather a whole series to prove their worth.
Shikhar Dhawan will also be looking to cement his own place in the side. Lately, Dhawan's form has been worrisome and with a fit KL Rahul, alongside captain Rohit Sharma, and the emergence of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, the left-handed Delhi batsman will need a good run to make a statement.
In his last five ODIs, Dhawan has made 112 runs at an average of 28 and a strike rate of 61.53. It has been 20 innings since he last scored a century in the format.
West Indies, on the other hand, have their own set of problems to deal with. The biggest concern of the West Indies would be batting out for 50 overs when batting first, as, since January 2021, they have failed to do so 9 times in their 12 attempts of batting first.
However, West Indies will be coming into the match with some positivity as the veteran all-rounder and former captain, Jason Holder is back in the side after being rested from the series against Bangladesh.
"He [Holder] looks fresh, he had some time out of the game. He has been bowling well for the last two days and actually batting well too. So it's good to have him back," said West Indies coach Phil Simmons.
Also, the Windies captain Nicolas Pooran has a favourable record against India: 354 runs in nine innings, at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 107.59.
Here are some interesting stats to have a look at:
- India have won eight of their last nine matches at the Queen's Park Oval. The other game was washed out.
- Dhawan will be India's seventh captain across formats this calendar year.
- Among Full Member players, Akeal Hosein is the leading wicket-taker in ODI cricket this year. In 14 games so far, he has picked up 22 wickets at an economy of 4.90.
Here are the squads for both sides as they look to lock horns from July 22:
West Indies: Nicholas Pooran (C), Shai Hope (VC), Shamarh Brooks, Keacy Carty, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell Jayden Seales
India: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill, Shardul Thakur, Suryakumar Yadav
The pitch has been criticised a lot in the recently concluded West Indies-Bangladesh ODI series and it was terrible for batting as pitch conditions just kept getting worse. The Queen’s Park Oval will be looking to provide a better pitch than Guyana as all the three ODI’s will be played on this ground. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy with the temperature hovering around 30°C.
