Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir, who is rumoured to be the favourite for the post of the Indian Cricket Team (ICT) head coach, has labelled the job as his 'honour' if he becomes the ICT head coach one day, and further stated that he would 'love to coach ICT'. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have clearly stated their position in terms of the post of ICT team, as Rahul Dravid's tenure will come to an end after the conclusion of T20 World Cup 2024.
"I have not answered this question, although a lot of people have asked me. But I have to answer you now. I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well," said Gautam Gambhir, during a session with students at an event conducted at the Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi.
Gautam Gambhir's Dominant Tenure With Kolkata Knight Riders In IPL 2024
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 saw complete annihilation and sheer dominance from Kolkata Knight Riders mentored by former Indian World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir. Under the mentorship of Gambhir, KKR lost merely 3 games whole season and delivered on every front, be it with the bat, ball, or in the field. Multiple 10+ wicket takers, run scorers and match winners, KKR did what was necessary to win a title and in their pursuit of the title, they created history by restricting runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad to the lowest ever 1st innings total in the history of IPL finals.
Given the fact that Gambhir has now won the IPL both as a player and a mentor, there is no denying that the 42-year old can be the perfect man for the job of ICT head coach.
