Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara showcased his prowess in domestic cricket following his exclusion from the national Test squad for the South Africa series. Despite Saurashtra's low total of 144 runs, the 35-year-old exhibited his resilience by scoring an unbeaten 55 off 114 deliveries. Facing a challenging Alur pitch that favoured the bowlers significantly, Pujara arrived at the crease at No. 4 when Saurashtra was struggling at 7 for 2. Displaying grit, he emerged as the sole standout player, notching his 34th fifty in List A cricket.

Pujara's contribution was noteworthy as he was the lone player to surpass the 30-run mark, significantly helping Saurashtra in achieving a modest total. With over 5,500 List A runs earlier this year, his current tally stands at 5,732 runs across 128 games, maintaining an impressive average exceeding 56, featuring 16 centuries, and a highest score of 174. However, his performance in five ODI appearances for India reflected just 51 runs at an average of 10.20.

Despite his commendable performance, Pujara's exclusion from India's Test squad for the upcoming South Africa tour has raised doubts about his future in international cricket. His last appearance for India dates back to the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia. As young talents like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill gain prominence, Pujara's return to the national team appears increasingly uncertain.

Having accumulated 7,195 runs in 103 Tests at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, Pujara's tenure in international cricket might be coming to a close due to the evolving cricket landscape and the emergence of fresh talents.

While uncertainties linger about his future at the international level, Pujara's commitment to the sport and his knack for contributing crucial runs for his team remain evident from his recent resilient performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
