BCCI Selector 'Had To Quit' From His Post As Officials 'Were Not Aware Of A Rule'

BCCI: Team India selector Abey Kuruvilla was part of the selection committee for more than 5 years. Now he had to quit the post.

Team India Selector: Abey Kuruvilla, one of the selectors of India's Senior Selection Committee of cricket in India, suddenly had to step down. A new rule by BCCI triggered the decision.

According to the BCCI rule, no person can be a part of the selection committee for more than 5 years. Kuruvilla had completed his tenure long before. But the board officials themselves and Kuruvilla as well were unaware of this new rule. This was revealed in a report that featured in 'The Indian Express'.

The selection committee has one selector from each zone. Former Mumbai fast bowler Kuruvilla was made the selector of India's senior cricket team from the West Zone. He was given this position in December 2020. Before this, he was a chief selector of the Junior selection committee. He had been on that post for 4 years. This means with both of these positions he had completed 5 years in all.

'BCCI Officials Were Not Aware' 

According to The Indian Express, BCCI officials were unaware of the new rule. When Sanjeev Gupta, a former member of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, filed a complaint in January regarding this, it was only at that time that they came to know about the rule. After Kuruvilla stepped down, the senior selection committee has 4 members now (Chetan Sharma, Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh and Debashish Mohanty).

The BCCI will soon invite fresh applications for a new selector in place of Kuruvilla. Board officials told The Indian Express that Kuruvilla's tenure was over. Now the BCCI will invite fresh applications and the Cricket Advisory Committee will interview the new candidates.
