Former captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team and current Petroleum Minister, Arjun Ranatunga has sought help from India for investigating matters related to match-fixing. Petroleum Minister Ranatunga said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) can provide technical expertise in investigating allegations of massive corruption in Sri Lanka Cricket.
The 1996 World cup winning captain said, “I made the request, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately put me in touch with the CBI. We don't have the expertise or the laws to deal with this problem in a proper manner. India promised to help us in drafting legislation too," the minister said after returning from New Delhi.
Earlier, in the year 2000, both Ranatunga and his deputy Aravinda de Silva were named by the CBI in a match-fixing investigation. However, later the pair was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Sri Lanka Cricket had promised that special police units will be formed to investigate the allegations of match-fixing. These allegations of match-fixing were imposed in the documentary released in May.
In the recent past, the country's former batsman Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged for not cooperating with a match-fixing probe and concealing information.
