MS Dhoni's iconic six that helped India script the historic win in 2011 World Cup may have got etched in our memories. However, not many of us recall that the ball got lost in the stands and Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) failed in their attempts to locate the ball. In line with the ‘cricket stadium’ tradition, the association wanted to enshrine the seat in the memory of the MS Dhoni and the terrific win. After the association made its intention public, cricket veteran Sunil Gavaskar contacted them.
The legendary batman wrote to the association saying he is aware of the person who has not only preserved the World Cup ticket but also the ball that was part of one of most cherishing moments for Indian cricket fans.
The identity of the person, which remains a secret is known to be Gavaskar’s friend’s friend, who had witnessed the spectacular match on that seat. In fact, he has the ball that Dhoni had hit for that iconic six.
That spot has now been identified as seat number 210 in the MCA Pavilion, L Block.
The name of the person is still not made public, but as per the report in the Indian Express the person is known to be staying abroad, and has safely preserved both the Cup final ticket and the ball.
As per the report, Gavaskar wrote to MCA Apex Council member Ajinkya Naik intimating that he can extend support in locating the ball that was lost during the high pitch match.
Now, MCA may request Gavaskar to provide details of the spectator by getting in touch with him. As a tribute to the MS Dhoni and his contribution to the game, the cricket association, will officially request to get the ball to be preserved as a souvenir in the planned museum. The museum is expected to cater to visitors at Wankhede. In fact, the Museum Committee also intends in meeting the person as well.
