CWG 2022: The Commonwealth Games 2022 Birmingham will be an iconic event as it will just not be historic for one, but for two reasons. Here are the two reasons that will make Birmingham Games an iconic event:

More Women’s events than Men’s events: The 2022 Birmingham Games will feature more Women’s events than Men’s events and it is the first instance in CWG history. No previous editions had more women’s events in comparison with men’s events. Traditionally, women were not allowed to participate in the Commonwealth Games, as they were exclusively for men. However, since the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, women’s impact on the games has grown stronger and stronger. Women empowerment also gained prominence in the previous edition as the 2018 Gold Coast games saw an equal number of events for men and women. The rise of women’s events in the multi-sport event also sends a clear message of gender equality in sports.

“The Commonwealth Sports Movement is proud to be setting the pace for equal gender representation and opportunity in sport,” said Louise Martin DBE, Commonwealth Games Federation President.

Birmingham 2022 will not only see T20 Cricket make its Commonwealth Games debut but will mark a first appearance for the women’s game, too. Cricket has been played at the multi-sport event once before. It was the men’s 50-over competition held in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and South Africa notched up Gold on that occasion.

Introduction of ESports in the Games: The Electronic sporting community has gained prominence in recent times and the ESports industry will touch its pinnacle of reach, credibility and popularity as it is introduced for the first time ever in the 2022 Birmingham Games. This comes in as a major boost for all the ESports athletes to not just make money as a professional, but now win a medal and do their country proud. The introduction of ESports in the 2022 Birmingham Games also means that it will be an encouraging factor for the people who have had lots of doubters regarding their pursuance of ESports as their career.
