Paris 2024 Olympics: While India had its best-ever performance at an Olympic event at Tokyo 2020 which was played in 2021, will it be able to better the same in Paris?

With the Paris 2024 Olympics set to get underway on July 26, here is a look at India's top medal contenders. The first name that will be on everyone's mind is that of Defending Men's Javelin Throw Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra. Ever since his historic feat at Tokyo 2020, where he won the country's first-ever medal, that too a gold, in a track and field event, the country will be hoping for him to recreate that magic. PV Sindhu, India's ace shuttler, is the only athlete from the country to have won more than one Olympic medal at an individual event. She won the silver at Rio 2016 and although she did not feature in the gold medal match in Tokyo, she clinched the bronze. Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal on the very first official day of Olympic Games in Tokyo. She had to deal with injury issues but given her performance under pressure in the past, there is every reason to believe that Mirabai will bag India a medal in Paris 2024. (Image Source: PTI)

Boxing could be one of India's strongest suits at Paris 2024. Lovlina Borgohain who won a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 will be in medal contention yet again. She is currently ranked fourth in the world and has the 2023 World Boxing Championships as well as the Silver medal at the 2022 Asian games in her resume which speaks of her calibre of performing at the big events. Chirag Shetty was recently in the news after he alleged that Maharashtra Government is discriminating between sports as it awarded the cricketers of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team but did not recognise his Thomas Cup achievement. If the duo of Chirag Shetty And Satwiksairaj Rankireddy play close to as good as they have been in recent years, they are almost guaranteed of an Olympic medal. They became the first Indian duo to be ranked number 1 in the world and if they manage to add an Olympic medal to the long list of achievements, no government will be able to ignore the amazing performances they have stitched competition after competition. Shooting was a let down in the Tokyo Olympics. Despite having some of the best talent, India failed to win a single medal in that sport last time. All eyes will be on Manu Bhaker whose gun malfunction might have derailed her debut Olympic but she would be better prepared and would feel better prepared and calmer the next time around she is representing India in Olympics in Paris. Antim Panghal will also walk into Paris 2024 as one of the favourites for a medal. She secured an Olympic quota with a bronze medal at the World Championships and is currently ranked sixth in the world.
