Nikhat Zareen defeated two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam 5-0 in the 50kg summit clash to win her second world Championships.

Nikhat became only the second Indian, after ace pugilist MC Mary Kom, to win the Women's World Boxing Championships gold medal twice with this victory. Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) and Saweety Boora (81kg) were crowned world champions on Saturday.

I am very happy to be a world champion for the second time, especially in an Olympic category, Nikhat, who won the 52kg title last year, said after her victory.

The first fight of the day, between the two Asians, was a thrilling battle that came down to the wire. Today's bout was the most difficult for me because she is an Asian champion, and my next goal is the Asian Games, where I might meet her, so I will work hard, Nikhat said.

Lovlina Borgohain, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, won her first gold medal in the Women's World Boxing Championships on Sunday, defeating Australia's Caitlin Parker 5-2 in the 75 kg category at New Delhi's KD Jadhav Indoor Hall.

Lovlina's gold medal win helped India win their fourth gold medal in the tournament's 2023 edition, matching their best-ever performance in terms of gold medals won in the tournament's history.

India had won four gold medals in the 2006 edition, which was also the country's best ever showing with eight medals, including a silver.

Lovlina got off to a flying start, winning the first round by a split verdict of 3:2 in an aggressive manner. Lovlina's Australian opponent demonstrated her class in the second round, making a stunning comeback to win the round 1:4. Borgohain outclassed her opponent in the final bout to earn a split decision victory. The Assam-born pugilist won the match 5-2 after a bout review.
