Competing in a challenging Group A with Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India surprised the hosts with a 17-run victory in their opening match and finished the group stage unbeaten. Their semi final against England was washed out due to rain, allowing India to advance as group leaders.
