The 30-year-old has spent most of the time in last 12 months on the sidelines with calf injuries.
But, he will be welcomed back in the Sri Lankan set-up after their recent struggles in limited-over contest.
Sri Lanka have lost 16 white-ball matches including whitewash against India and Pakistan.
They will look to turn things around when they visit India for 3 Tests, 3 ODI’s and as many T20’s.
Along with Mathews, Kusal Perera and Asela Gunaratne are expected to return in the squad for India series.
Sri Lanka cricket has received a much needed boost ahead of their tour to India later this month.
