President Droupadi Murmu paid homage to freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at his ancestral home in Kolkata on Monday. Murmu, who is in West Bengal for two days, went around Netaji Bhawan, which is now a memorial. Netaji's grandnephew Sumantra Bose told Murmu about the significance of the historical building, which is where a number of events during the country's freedom struggle took place.

Murmu was first informed, accompanied by Governor CV Ananda Bose, about the historic vehicle known as The 1937 Wanderer W24, in which Netaji escaped from his residence on January 16, 1941. The president went to Netaji's bedroom, study, and The Great Escape staircase, which Netaji had used to get downstairs to his nephew Sisir Bose's parked Wanderer for him to use as a means of escape.

Murmu left Netaji Bhawan after about ten minutes for a brief visit to Rabindranath Tagore's residence at Jorasanko Thakurbari in the city's center.
