In 2017, Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton was India's official entry to Oscars and was then accused of being copied from a 2001 Iranian film 'Secret Ballot''. According to reports, the director of the film had justified that it could very well be the case that someone else in another part of the world had written a similar story.

The latest Gujarati film Chhello Show which has been India's entry to Oscars has come under fire for being 'copied' from the classic Italian film 'Cinema Paradiso'.

Barfi! starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra was India' s official entry to the Oscars in 2013. However, the film came under criticism for being copied from the Hollywood classic Singin In The Rain. In fact, many had compared how even scenes were copied from the Hollywood classic.

As Chhello Show, India's official entry to the Oscars 2023, the debate of being original and 'RRR' not being sent brought attention to India's previous official entries which were allegedly copies of classics.
