Amit Palekar is a lawyer and social activist who has transitioned into politics. He ran for office in the St. Cruz constituency. He is from the Bhandari community, which makes up about 35% of Goa's population. Col Kothiyal is from a non-political family. He has been well-liked in the state since the 2013 Kedarnath floods when he rescued several lives. He was also the founder and director of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi.
