The Lake And The Musical Composition
The salt lake is located in the Ereymentau region of Kazakhstan, about 160 kilometers from the capital Nur-Sultan, according to a July 2020 Astana Times report, which also said the lake is known for its "healing mud". Dunaliella salina, a type of halophile green microalgae that is usually found in sea salt fields, is responsible for the lake’s pink colour, the report said, adding that this microalgae has the ability to create a large amount of carotenoids, which in turn create the reddish hue. The report said D. Salina has antioxidants activity because of which it is used in cosmetics and dietary supplements. Taking a dip in the pink water is also considered to have beneficial effects.
About Marzhan Kapsamat’s video, the report said she was playing famous Kazakh composer Dauletkerey Shigaiuly’s “Korugly”.
“I knew that the performance on the pink lake would attract the attention of not only locals but also foreign people,” the report quoted her as saying. She said she wanted more people to know about the dombrya and also her country.
Explaining the composition, she said “Korugly” is a Turkic word that is translated as “Son of the blind”. According to her, all Turkic people know this composition. Legend has it that a woman was buried pregnant but her child was born and survived, which is why it is also translated as “Son born from the grave”.
