Manipur is on the boil after a video showing two tribal women from a particular community being paraded naked went viral. The issue has led to nationwide outrage, with Opposition parties demanding the resignation of Manipur CM Biren Singh. The video, which was shot on May 4, a day after clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki tribes over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status, surfaced on Wednesday.
The video shows two women being paraded naked in Kangpokpi district in Manipur, which has been hit by ethnic violence. The main accused was arrested from Thoubal district on Thursday morning. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said strict action would be taken against all the perpetrators and the government was considering the possibility of capital punishment.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal on Sunday landed in Imphal to interact with sexual abuse survivors, a day after the state government asked her to postpone her visit to Manipur. While speaking to ANI, Maliwal said, "I will directly go to the CM's Office. I want to meet chief minister, N Biren Singh. I want to meet the sexual abuse survivors and see if they have got legal aid, counselling or any compensation."
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the ethnic conflicts in Manipur have "genesis in faulty politics" of previous Congress governments in the state.
Upon reaching the airport, Swati Maliwal appealed to the state government saying that she has reached there to help the people of Manipur. "Please allow me to do that. I have not come here to do politics. I request PM Modi and the Women and Child Development Minister (Smriti Irani) to visit Manipur. I will also try and meet the Governor," Maliwal said.
Speaking to reporters, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai said, "We all know that Manipur has been a very complex state, even before BJP came to power. The video that we have seen is extremely shameful and it has got no place in the democratic society. Action has been taken against this, and six people have also been arrested. When we look at the same incidents in West Bengal and Rajasthan, why are the political parties not talking about that?"
Over 120 have died in the ethnic violence since it erupted two months ago and thousands have been displaced. Several Opposition parties have targeted the BJP and are expected to raise the incident in Parliament, which is set to be a stormy affair.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said the government was ready for a discussion on the situation in Manipur.
