Manipur Violence: Centre Announces Compensation Of Rs 10 Lakh For Kin Of Victims

The Centre has announced a compensation package of Rs 10 Lakh for the kin of victims of violence in Manipur.

Guwahati: The government has announced that the families of the civilians killed in the ethnic clashes in Manipur since the outbreak of the violent clashes on May 3, 2023, will get a relief of Rs 10 lakh each, as part of a compensation package drawn up by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in consultation with the N Biren Singh-led Manipur cabinet. The Manipur government and the Centre will reportedly make a 50:50 contribution to the compensation amount. Besides the monetary compensation, the government is contemplating providing a government job to any eligible member of the next of kin of those killed in the violent clashes.

On the other hand, the state administration has been instructed to work on finding a way out with the help of the Centre in ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to the people of the crisis-hit state.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister on Tuesday reviewed the security situation in the violence-hit state in a meeting with senior officials of the Manipur police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and the Indian Army in the state capital Imphal.

After convening the meeting, Shah took to Twitter to say that the peace and prosperity of Manipur are our top priority. The Union Home Minister instructed the security forces to strictly deal with any activities disturbing the peace.

Shah also had a meeting with the civil society organisations of the state in Imphal.

After the meeting Shah tweeted, “Had a fruitful discussion with the members of the different Civil Society Organizations today in Imphal. They expressed their commitment to peace and assured that we would together contribute to paving the way to restore normalcy in Manipur.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Amit Shah visited one of the worst-affected Churachandpur districts. He also held a meeting with a group of women leaders.

“Held a meeting with a group of women leaders (Meira Paibi) in Manipur. Reiterated the significance of the role of women in the society of Manipur. Together, we are committed to ensuring peace and prosperity in the state, Shah tweeted after the meeting.”

Amit Shah was on a three-day visit to the violence-torn state since Monday evening. He is likely to return to the national capital on Thursday.

The violent clashes have so far claimed at least 80 lives in the state since the ethnic clashes between the majority of Meiteis and the hill tribe Kukis erupted on May 3, 2023.

The good news that came by the end of the day on Tuesday is that no major incident of violence was reported from across the state. However, the situation in the state continues to be tense, with a couple of unconfirmed reports of sporadic incidents being reported from some of the vulnerable areas of the state.
