Guwahati: People from the Kuki-Zo community on Thursday held a mass prayer in Manipur’s Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district of the strife-torn state to mark 90 days of the ethnic clashes in the state. The event was organised by the Kangpokpi District Tribal Churches Leaders Fellowship at the Brig. M Thomas ground. People from the Kuki-Zo community also pressed their demand for a separate administration at the earliest.
Prominent leaders of the Kuki-Zo community, church leaders, intellectuals, civil society organisation leaders, and social workers among others attended the prayer meeting.
As many as three prayer sessions were held during the five-hour-long mass prayer. Crowd contribution, in cash and kind, for the cause of the Kuki-Zo community, was also the agenda of the prayer meeting.
“The Kuki-Zo people from across the district marked the 90-days of Manipur's mayhem today as we prayed for our community’s divine protection, protection by the central government, and a speedy solution in the form of a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people,” advisor of the Kangpokpi District Tribal Churches Leaders Fellowship, Rev. V Sitlhou, said.
Names and photographs of those killed in the ethnic clashes in the ongoing violence were put up for the people to pay their tribute.
Several prominent Kuki-Zo gospel artists took part in the mass prayer event with gospel songs.
This comes as the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), an apex body of recognized tribes in Manipur, has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah with a five-point memorandum, requesting a five-day delay in the burial of the deceased from the Kuki-Zo communities.
In the letter addressed to the Union Home Minister, the tribal organization stated, "After extensive discussions amongst ITLF members and various stakeholders, we have agreed to consider the Ministry of Home Affairs' request for a five-day delay in the burial. However, this agreement is contingent on the fulfilment of our five-point demands."
