The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered an FIR in the Manipur viral video case, two days after it filed an affidavit in the Supreme Cort informing it that the case will now be probed by the central agency, reported ANI citing CBI officials. The news agency PTI reported that the agency has taken over the FIR registered by the Manipur Police against unidentified people in accordance with its procedure. On Thursday, the Centre, in an affidavit, said the CBI would probe the video incident and asserted that the government had "zero tolerance towards any crimes against women".

The affidavit, filed by the Home Ministry, also urged the apex court to transfer the trial of the case outside Manipur for its completion in a time-bound manner. The Centre requested the SC to pass directions to transfer the probe to a state other than Manipur.

The affidavit was filed in response to a suo motu case registered by the Supreme Court after the video of the incident, which was shot on May 4, went viral on social media, triggering nationwide outrage. The video showed two women being paraded naked by a mob in the state.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court did not hear the case on Friday due to the non-availability of the Chief Justice of India. A Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra, had on July 20 sought the responses of the Centre and Manipur government on the steps taken by it to book the perpetrators seen in the video in which two tribal women were paraded naked in Manipur.

Seven persons have been arrested in the case so far. "They have been booked for various offences including rape and murder," the affidavit further said.

The development comes at a time when opposition MPs of the 'INDIA' coalition are visiting the ethnic strife-hit Manipur to assess the ground situation. The matter continues to hit the parliament proceedings as well as opposition remains adamant on its demand for PM Narendra Modi's statement on Manipur inside both Houses.
