Storm Wreaks Havoc At Guwahati Airport, Video Shows Water Gushing Inside Terminal After Portion Of Roof Collapses
Heavy rain and wind damaged the Guwahati airport, causing flight delays and diversions as a portion of the roof collapsed and water gushed inside terminal.
A sudden downpour accompanied by a storm wreaked havoc at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Sunday, causing authorities to briefly suspend operations and divert six flights to other destinations, according to a senior official. A video purportedly showed the ceiling collapsing and rainwater gushing inside the airport terminal.
An airport management source told ABP Live: "The incident occurred on the external side of the terminal building. The situation was brought under control within 20-30 minutes. There is no leakage now. All the accumulated water has been cleared too."
Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah informed news agency PTI that the storm uprooted a large tree at the Oil India complex outside the Adani Group-controlled facility, blocking a road. Baruah stated, "We immediately rushed there and cleared the road for a smooth supply of fuel to the terminal. It took us over half-an-hour."

Baruah also mentioned that when the rain and storm hit the area, a portion of the roof in the forecourt area was blown away. He explained, "It was very old and could not withstand the impact. Due to this, the ceiling broke open and water started flowing inside. However, there was no injury and everything is under control."
A video purportedly showing the ceiling collapsing and rainwater gushing has gone viral on various social media platforms. Baruah confirmed that water entered the terminal from the ceiling.

According to PTI, the senior official further stated, "I am personally monitoring the situation so that passengers do not face any inconvenience. Due to the storm and heavy rain, the visibility dropped drastically and we had to divert six flights."
The flights, operated by IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express, were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata. Baruah confirmed that visibility has improved, and normal operations have resumed, with flights starting to land in Guwahati.
