New Delhi: The investigation into the death of an Assam BJP leader, who died allegedly by suicide, has led to the arrest of five persons, who are suspected to be involved in a 'cash-for-job-scam' of the present state government, news agency PTI reported. According to Assam Police, BJP Kisan Morcha joint secretary Trishna Sharma was the latest arrest made in connection with the case. Earlier, police had arrested Anurag Chaliha, Diban Deka, Rekhanta Das and Ashim Chakraborty.

According to the report, BJP Kisan Morcha leader Indrani Tahbildar died by suicide on August 11 after some of her intimate photos with another BJP member went viral on the social media. She had allegedly consumed an overdose of sleeping pills that led to her death, police said.

Police have made five arrests in the suicide case so far and all those taken into custody allegedly have a role in the recruitment scam in the state, PTI reported.

Diban Deka, BJP Kisan Morcha's former national executive member, was earlier arrested in October 2020 over his alleged involvement in the Assam Police recruitment exam paper leak scam. Deka was expelled by the party immediately after the arrest. The former BJP leader was released from jail recently, PTI reported.

Anurag Chaliha who was expelled from the saffron party, was also a Kisan Morcha leader. Ashim Chakraborty was a BJP cadre with close links with the party, PTI reported.

Rekhanta Das was the Nalbari district president of Kishan Morcha. He was relieved of all party responsibilities after his name cropped up in the scam during the ongoing probe into the suicide case, according to PTI.

As per the news agency, the police had initially started investigating the suicide case. However, the scam angle surfaced when they found several admit cards of various government jobs from the house of Chaliha after his arrest.

Speaking on the alleged involvement of the party functionaries in the case, BJP senior spokesperson Rupam Goswami told PTI, "The law will take its own course. The party will not interfere in any legal and investigation matters."

Earlier on Thursday, a delegation of women leaders of the opposition Congress met Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, demanding stringent action against those who allegedly abetted the suicide of the BJP leader, PTI reported.
