Violence erupted in the Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday during the scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming Assembly polls, resulting in injuries to the Superintendent of Police, according to an official. A mob engaged in stone-pelting after the rejection of Gangdiap Gangsa's nomination, the National Peoples' Party (NPP) candidate from the Pongchou-Wakka seat, by the returning officer (RO) on the grounds of holding an office of profit, informed Longding Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bekir Nyorak, as reported by news agency PTI.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dekio Gumja sustained injuries to his cheek during the violence. Security forces intervened by firing several rounds in the air to disperse the crowd, restoring normalcy and bringing the situation under control, stated the DC.
According to news agency ANI, Chukhu Apa, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Arunachal Pradesh informed that the situation is now under control and adequate security personnel have been deployed. Five people have ben detained so far.
Gangsa, currently serving as an assistant mineral development officer (AMDO), had tendered his resignation to the government prior to the announcement of polls. However, his resignation was not accepted, leading to a legal dispute. Nyorak explained that Gangsa's nomination was rejected due to the non-acceptance of his resignation and the ongoing case in the Gauhati High Court, PTI's report stated.
Visuals from the stone-pelting incident were shared by PTI on social media.
