WHO Chief Says He Was At Yemen Airport Where Israeli Attack Killed 3
Israeli airstrikes in Yemen's capital Sanaa and western city of Hodeidah killed at least six people and injured dozens.
World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was at the airport in Yemen's capital Sanaa when an Israeli airstrike killed six.
Israeli forces launched a series of strikes on the Yemeni capital and western city of Hodeidah on Thursday. At least six people were killed in the attacks while dozens were injured, said the Iran-backed Houthi-run al-Masirah television.
The WHO chief said he was at the airport with a team from the United Nations, about to get on a plane when the airport came under attack, reported CNN.
“As we were about to board our flight from Sanaa… the airport came under aerial bombardment. One of our plane’s crew members was injured,” Ghebreyesus said in a statement, adding that he and the team were safe.
“The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged. We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave,” he added.
In the western city of Hodeidah, at least three people were killed and ten others wounded in the attack. The ports of Hodeidah and Ras Issa, and the Ras Kutub power station in Hodeidah Governorate, were some of the locations that came under attack said the Houthis.
At least 40 people were injured in total, Houthis said, calling the attack “a brutal aggression” as it vowed revenge.
Hezam al-Asad, a member of the Houthi political council threatened Israel saying "Gush Dan is no longer safe." Gush Dan is a metropolitan area in central Israel that includes Tel Aviv and adjacent towns and cities.
On Thursday, the Israeli military said it hit "military targets" belonging to Houthis.
“The targets that were struck by the IDF include military infrastructure used by the Houthi terrorist regime for its military activities in both the Sanaa International Airport and the Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations,” said the Israeli Defence Forces in a statement.
