US Inauguration Day 2021: A Low Affair Event

The event as usual will continue to draw worldwide attention but the inauguration ceremony will be a bit different this time. The inauguration will take place amid extraordinary levels of security concerns raised after the attack on the US Capitol building on January 6 by the protestors batting for outgoing President Donald Trump.

Around 25,000 National Guard troops will be coming to Washington for the event, as per US defence officials. The National Guards at the swearing-in ceremony are at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals.

President Trump will be the first incumbent president since Andrew Johnson to not attend his successor’s inauguration. Alleging fraud in the counting of votes during the 2020 US presidential elections, President Trump refused to concede power.

The usual celebrations have this time been dialled down courtesy the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Transfer Of Power

The ceremony will be followed by the long standing tradition of the ‘Pass in Reviews’, a longstanding tradition in which the new President assesses the military troops and where the military will reflect the peaceful transfer of power to a new Commander-in-Chief.

President-elect, First Lady, Vice President-elect and Second Gentleman will participate in this event to be held at the Capitol's East Front.

Following the event, Harris and former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their spouses, will travel to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The President-elect will then be receiving a Presidential Escort from 15th Street to the White House, which will represent all branches of the American military.

The official ceremony will conclude with a “Parade Across America” that features communities from across the nation and their performances. The parade will be televised at all the major American networks.

Bonus Celebrations

The day will come to an end with a bonus 90-minute prime time programme “Celebrating America”, including interactions with Biden and Harris, to be hosted by Tom Hanks.
