'We Take Safety Of Diplomats Seriously': Canadian Foreign Min On Pro-Khalistan Posters Naming Indian Envoys

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has said that Canada takes the safety of diplomats very seriously. This came after pro-Khalistan poster naming Indian envoys surfaced on social media.

Amid reports of a Khalistan protest in Canada on July 8, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has assured that the country takes the safety of diplomats very seriously, adding that the actions of a few do not speak for the entire community. Joly took to Twitter and said that Canada remains in close contact with Indian officials in light of some of the promotional material circulating online regarding a protest planned for July 8.

"Canada takes its obligations under the Vienna Conventions regarding the safety of diplomats very seriously. Canada remains in close contact with Indian officials in light of some of the promotional material circulating online regarding a protest planned for July 8th, which are unacceptable," Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in the tweet.

Notably, on Monday External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India has asked its partner countries such as Canada, the UK and the US not to give space to extremist Khalistani ideology as it is not good for relations, reported PTI. The minister was responding to questions on reports of Khalistani posters in Canada naming Indian diplomats.

He said that the issue will be raised with the government of that country. The radical, extremist Khalistani ideology is not good for India or its partner countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, he told reporters on the sidelines of a BJP outreach campaign, as per PTI.

"We have already requested our partner countries like Canada, the US, the UK and Australia where sometimes Khalistani activities happen, not to give space to Khalistanis. Because their (Khalistanis) radical, extremist thinking is neither good for us nor for them nor our relations," the minister said.

Jaishankar said that India will raise the issue of posters with those governments. "I think it would have already been done by now as it happened two to three days earlier," he added, as per PTI.

As per a report in The Print, the purported poster features photos of India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa Sanjay Kumar Verma and Consul General in Toronto Apoorva Srivastava. The words ‘Faces of Shaheed Nijjar’s Killers in Toronto’ appear above the photos.

This comes days after Khalistan Tiger Force chief and designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead in Canada's Brampton.

India last month slammed Canada after visuals surfaced on social media of a tableau in Brampton that reportedly celebrated the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi to mark he 39th anniversary of Operation Blue Star.

At that time, Jaishankar asked why the Canadian authorities were giving space to separatists, extremists and “people who promote violence”. “It’s not good for the (bilateral) relationship and it’s not good for Canada,” he had said.
