Putin Begins Fifth Term
Since assuming office at the close of 1999, succeeding President Boris Yeltsin, Putin has overseen a major transformation of Russia’s position on the global stage. From a nation grappling with economic turmoil, Russia has evolved into a contentious player, particularly following the 2022 incursion into Ukraine, which triggered severe sanctions from the West. Consequently, Russia has sought alliances with other regimes, including China, Iran, and North Korea.
With a tenure extending nearly a quarter-century, Putin stands as the longest-serving Kremin leader since Joseph Stalin. His current term, set to conclude in 2030, affords him the possibility of further electoral bids, as permitted by the constitutional provisions.
As per a report by AP, the event drew 2,500 attendees, including high-ranking Russian officials and notable figures like American actor Steven Seagal. However, major absences were observed, with ambassadors from the US, UK, and Germany notably absent, citing prior engagements.
