United States: US President Donald Trump (in file photo) has declared that an emergency exists in Washington DC & ordered Federal assistance to supplement the District’s response efforts due to emergency conditions resulting from 59th Presidential Inauguration from Jan 11 to Jan 24, the White House said on Monday.


Trump approved an emergency declaration for Washington after authorities warned of security threats to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration next week.

What is the emergency order ?

The order authorises federal assistance to be extended through January 24 to support efforts in Washington, DC to respond to the emergency situation. It specifically allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to “identify, mobilise and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency”.

Why the order was approved?

The move comes in the wake of the recent US Capitol Siege on January 6, allegedly incited by Trump’s claims that the presidential election of 2020 was stolen. In an unprecedented sight, thousands of pro-Trump protesters marched towards the Capitol and entered its premises wreaking havoc as the security guards were outnumbered. In the violence that followed, as many as 5 people lost their lives. .

As per reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also  warned of possible armed protests in all 50 states and in the US capital in the days leading up to Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

Trump impeachment:

Democrats say the House will consider the impeachment of President Donald Trump on Wednesday, one week after an angry mob of his supporters invaded the Capitol, reports said.

House Democrats have moved quickly to draft an article of impeachment charging Trump with incitement of insurrection because he egged on thousands of his supporters ahead of the riots by falsely telling them that the election was stolen from him.
