New Delhi: Tensions have been soaring up between US and China amid coronavirus, Hong Kong's status, and other issues. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Sunday that Washington is pushing relations with China to "the brink of a new Cold War".

"It has come to our attention that some political forces in the US are taking China-US relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War," foreign minister Wang Yi told reporters.

Yi further said that some political forces in the US are taking China-US relations hostage and pushing the two countries to the brink of a "new Cold War.”

Though Wang Yi did not identify what 'forces' he has mentioned, but it is known that Us President Donald Trump has been continuously criticizing China over the rise of the coronavirus pandemic. US, today became the worst-hit nation in the world with 1,666,828 cases in the country.

Addressing the media, the foreign minister said that both the countries have different social systems, which is a result of the different choices made by the Chinese people, which must be respected.

China introduced a security law in Hong Kong to suppress the semi-autonomous city's pro-democracy movement which has further raised the temperature, drawing US and world condemnation.

The security law resolution was introduced on Friday which said that it is to "prevent, frustrate and punish" threats to national security in Hong Kong. The draft legislation would outlaw acts of secession, subversion and terrorism.

The resolution is expected to be passed on May 28.

"Aside from the devastation caused by the novel coronavirus, there is also a political virus spreading through the US," Wang said at a press conference

He further added, "This political virus is the use of every opportunity to attack and smear China. Some politicians completely disregard basic facts and have fabricated too many lies targeting China, and plotted too many conspiracies."

Yesterday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that the US must immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs, harming China's interests or undermining China-US relations.
