Two Bihar Residents Arrested In Nepal With '150 kg Marijuana', Sent To Judicial Custody: Report

Two Indian nationals have been arrested in Nepal for being in possession of 150 kilograms of marijuana. Both accused persons are said to be residents of Bihar.

New Delhi: Nepal's Bara police claimed to have arrested two Indian nationals with 150 kilograms of marijuana. The arrests were made from Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City-10 of Bara district Wednesday, The Himalayan Times reported.

The two men have been identified as Ajit Paswan (35) and Ram Darshan Mahato (60), both residents of Bihar, which borders Nepal, according to the report. 

The Bara police said the marijuana consignment they seized from the two was found wrapped in ten packets, each weighing 15 kg. A local court has sent both Paswan and Mahato to judicial custody for further investigation, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Thapa was quoted as saying in the report.

India and Nepal share a porous border, which criminals from both countries frequently use to smuggle narcotics and also for other illegal activities.

Earlier this month, the Telangana police arrested a Nepal national with 60 grams of marijuana. The arrested man was identified as Dinesh Aavji alias Pedda Nepali (20) from Kathmandu, who was a daily wage worker at Mettuguda locality in Hyderabad, local media reported.

Meanwhile, Nepal is said to be planning to end marijuana ban in the country. According to an AFP report, the Himalayan nation's lawmakers are discussing the possibility of a return to liberal drug policies.

"It is not justifiable that a poor country like ours has to treat cannabis as a drug," the report quoted Nepal's Health Minister Birodh Khatiwada as saying.
