Rep. Mike Johnson Elected As US House Speaker, Ending GOP Turmoil
Johnson secured the speakership on the initial ballot, as all Republicans rallied behind him, eager to move past the recent weeks of turmoil and refocus on the task of governance
In a bid to restore order to the Republican majority, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected as the House speaker on Wednesday, putting an end, at least for now, to the internal political strife that has roiled the GOP, news agency AP reported. In a remarkable turn of events, Johnson secured the speakership on the initial ballot, as all Republicans rallied behind him, eager to move past the recent weeks of turmoil and refocus on the task of governance. He was poised to take the oath of office promptly.
Although not the Republican party's initial choice for the coveted position, Mike Johnson emerged as the fourth nominee in what has evolved into a bewildering cycle of power struggles following the ousting of Kevin McCarthy. The tumultuous internal battle for leadership has finally culminated with Johnson, a deeply conservative and steady-handed leader.

While he may not have been the top preference for the House's most prominent role, Johnson, known for his strong religious convictions, enjoys considerable support and a significant GOP ally in former President Donald Trump, according to AP.
“I think he’s gonna be a fantastic speaker,” stated Trump on Wednesday during a visit to a New York courthouse, where he is facing a lawsuit over business fraud while also emerging as the leading Republican contender for the 2024 presidential race.
Johnson's ascent to the speaker's role brings some relief after weeks of Republican disarray, during which the party's majority was largely underutilized. This disarray, viewed as an embarrassment by some and democracy in action by others, was far from the House's expected functionality.
The Republican party has been marred by a schism between far-right members, who resisted a more conventional choice for speaker, and moderate conservatives, who opposed a hardline candidate. In the end, Johnson emerged uncontested during the private roll call on Tuesday. Nevertheless, about two dozen Republicans chose not to cast their votes, a substantial number that could have jeopardized his nomination, as per AP's report.
With Rep. Mike Johnson at the helm as House speaker, the Republican party aims to regain its footing and move forward in its legislative pursuits, ending a chapter of internal strife that had drawn national attention.
