As per the report by news agency AFP, the police assured one and all that the sound was not the result of an explosion but caused by a fighter jet crossing the sound barrier. Hence, there is no need to panic and dial emergency contact numbers.

Parisians in the region were shocked by the sudden development as several took to social media to share what had just happened.

A video where the sound can be heard is being widely shared on Twitter. It from the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros, where Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka and his German opponent Dominik Koepfer were left stunned by the sound that echoed around the stadium.

It created a sense of tension and panic as just last Friday, a knife attack was carried out outside the former offices of Charlie Hebdo in central Paris. The violent incident came three weeks into the Paris trial in the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket.
