Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize after the country signed a landmark agreement with with Gulf neighbors Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates at the White House on Tuesday. According to several international media reports, a member of Italy’s parliament Paolo Grimoldi submitted the nomination for Netanyahu for the prestigious international award. Grimoldi cited PM's diplomatic achievements include signing the Abraham Accords and Jerusalem's efforts made towards Saudi Arabia.

Taking to his official Twitter account, Paolo Grimoldi said, "I presented the candidacy of @netanyahu for the #NobelPeacePrize. Why? 1) Pacification with UAE, 2) Pacification with Bahrain, 3) Dialogue with KSA & opening of Saudi airspace to Israeli aircraft producing debates on mutual recognition. Historic! Thanks to Trump as well!"



It may be recalled that in a massive breakthrough to normalise diplomatic relations and foster peace between them in the turbulent Middle East region, Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on August 14 forged a historic peace deal, largely with the help of US President Donald Trump.

Under the new peace agreement, Israel has agreed to suspend declaring sovereignty over those territories outlined in the President's Vision for Peace and changes it focus in now yearning on expanding ties with other countries in the Arabian desert and Muslim world.

In a separate post on the micro-blogging site, Paolo Grimoldi expressed his desire for a shared award between Netanyahu and the U.S. President Donald Trump.



It is worth mentioning that US President Donald Trump has also been nominated for 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for brokering peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) among resolving other conflicts.

A member of Norwegian Parliament Christian Tybring-Gjedde submitted the nomination for Trump citing his role in the establishment of relations between Israel and the UAE. He further cited “Trump’s key role in... creating new dynamics in other protracted conflicts, such as the Kashmir border dispute between India and Pakistan".

For the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020, there were 318 candidates , and out of that 211 were individuals and 107 are organisations.

Those eligible to nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize are public figures, including national politicians, professors and former prize winners. In February and March each year, nominations are shortlisted. The winners are announced in October.
