New Delhi: In a suicide attack in Libya’s capital Tripoli, at least 12 people have been reported dead and seven are reported injured.

The attackers opened fire at people present at Libya’s electoral commission in the capital.

Witnesses reported that they saw thick smoke and gunfire at the electoral commission.

As per reports, four armed assailants attacked the building on Wednesday morning. They killed the guards before opening fire on the people present. When the security forces arrived, at least two of the attackers reportedly blew themselves up. The building got damaged seriously after it caught fire.

The site is now sealed off.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility of the attack

The attack on the electoral centre came as Libya is gearing up to hold elections.

The UN has strongly condemned the attack. It is hoping that Libya can hold elections this year as it seeks to leave behind years of chaos since the 2011 ouster of dictator Moamer Gaddafi.

Images on social media showed fumes of smoke rising from the building and the charred insides of the building.
