New Delhi: French President Emmanuel Macron committed a little faux pas when he called Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s wife  “delicious”, as he was summing up his speech.

We may call it a slip of tongue or whatever we want, to defend it, but Twitter is already in fits of laughter at the blunder committed by the “perfect” (as described recently by Trump) President of France.

Coming from a man who is known for his gentlemanly conduct and for his immaculate sense of speech, the remark has raised many eyebrows.

Macron was wrapping up a joint news conference during his brief Australian when he ended up thanking his host’s “delicious wife”.

He said: “I want to thank you for your welcome, thank you and your delicious wife for your warm welcome," he said.

While many in his defense argued that it was a slip of tongue and what he actually wanted to say was “delightful wife” but given France’s inclination for gastronomy he ended up saying “delicious”.

Another explanation offered is that Macron may simply have slipped up in his use of English, since the French word for delicious ‘delicieux’ also translates as "delightful."

The incident also brought back memories of the times when US President Donald Trump was caught telling Macron's wife, Brigitte, on his Paris Trip, that she was "in such great shape”,  before looking to her husband and saying, "Beautiful."

It immediately triggered hilarious reactions on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
