'Germany Abandoned Independent Position': Russian Envoy After Vice-Chancellor's Remarks On Ukraine War

Russian Ambassador to India said German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck would do better to concentrate on India-Germany relations after Habeck arrived in Delhi and urged countries not to fund the Ukraine war.

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov on Thursday cited speculations as claiming that German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck will discuss Russia-India cooperation during his three-day visit to the country. He said Habeck would do better to concentrate on India-Germany relations instead and accused Germany of "abandoning" its independent position on security issues in Europe, "making its voice in the Ukrainian conflict irrelevant". The remarks come as Habeck arrived in Delhi today and blamed Moscow for disturbing the European peace order built after World War II.

"Noted reports that one of the goals of German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck's visit to India is to discuss Russia-India cooperation. He’d do better to concentrate on India-Germany relations instead as he’s supposed," the Russian envoy tweeted.

"Unfortunately, Germany has abandoned independent position on security issues in Europe making its voice in the Ukrainian conflict irrelevant," he added.

Ahead of his visit, the German Vice-Chancellor said that the Russian aggression on Ukraine is "unprecedented" and it has destroyed the European peace order built after the Second World War, news agency PTI reported.

"I know that Europe is a little bit away from Asia of course, but on the other hand this is of such importance that I urge all democracies worldwide to be clear in language and political position that this is not acceptable," Habeck said after arriving in the national capital.

“In no way this is acceptable. We answered with sanctions against it, also with military support for Ukraine. The sanction system means that we haven't banned the trade of oil, but there's a price cap on it. That means that you are allowed to buy crude oil... Okay. This is within the sanctioned system. But making money out of it, bringing more money to Russia, using this sanction system to benefit from it, is not the idea of it,” he added, as quoted by news agency ANI.

With respect to the price cap imposed on the purchase of Russian crude oil, he requested countries not to use the sanctions system to give credit, more money to Russia for Moscow to be able to fuel its war in Ukraine.

During his visit, Hackbeck is expected to hold high-level meetings with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Power Minister R K Singh. He will also be inaugurating an Indo-German Business Forum in Delhi titled 'Inviting innovation: Transforming the economy for a shared sustainable future'. The business forum will be hosted by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.

Vice-Chancellor Habeck will visit several Indo-German joint ventures in Delhi and Mumbai, the German embassy stated. In Mumbai, he is slated to engage with the government of Maharashtra to visit a non-governmental project supporting sustainable development and to have an exchange with young Indian entrepreneurs.

On the last leg of his visit, he will participate in the G20 Energy Ministers meeting in Goa.
