London: Wife of former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Kulsoom Nawaz, passed away in London on Tuesday. The news was confirmed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif on microblogging site Twitter.

68 years old Kulsoom Nawaz passed away at Harley Street Clinic where she remained admitted for over 7 months and was placed on life support earlier Tuesday as her health deteriorated.

Earlier in June, she had suffered a cardiac arrest. In 2017, she underwent a surgery to remove diseased lymph nodes after she was diagnosed with throat cancer. Following that, she has become weaker following multiple treatments and therapies.

It is reported that Kulsoom was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan for the first time from NA-120 (Lahore-III) as a candidate of PML (N) in by-polls held in September 2017. She secured 59,413 votes and defeated Yasmin Rashid of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

She served as Pakistan's first lady for three non-consecutive terms from 1990-1993, 1997-1999 and 2013-2017.

Born in 1950, she had married Sharif in April 1971.

On July 6, Nawaz was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of eight million pounds was slapped on him in the Avenfield Reference case, while Maryam was sentenced to seven years of jail and fined two million pounds, by the Accountability Court.

Sharif and their daughter Maryam are currently lodged in Rawalpindi jail.

Political leaders expressed their condolences on the demise of the former first lady.

PM Imran Khan also expresses deep sorrow over the sad demise of Begum Kalsoom Nawaz. He said all facilities will be provided to the family and heirs of Kalsoom Nawaz as per law.
