New Delhi: A ferry with more than 300 passengers on board caught fire and was stranded in the Baltic Sea after an explosion occurred in the engine room. The engine breakdown was reported at around 11:45 am as per reports when the vessel sent out a distress call. The Regina Seaways vessel operator said in a statement that the malfunction on board the ferry produced smoke, which triggered the ship’s fire extinguishing system in the engine room and that no passengers or crew members were injured. As per the reports, the country’s Air Force had dispatched a helicopter as soon as it was informed about the accident and kept two more on standby. The Danish shipping company DFDS which owns the ferry informed that passengers were assembled at emergency points in preparation for a possible evacuation, but it was not required because the situation was under control. It informed that all the passengers and crew members are safe and were not injured; however, the extent of damage is not fully known yet. The vessel was travelling from the northern Germany city of Kiel to the western Lithuanian city of Klaipeda. As per reports a rescue centre in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is coordinating the operation and Russian ships will tow the ferry to Lithuania's exclusive economic zone, where Lithuanian military ships will take over.
