New York: An explosion has rocked a crowded neighborhood in the city that has left several people injured, authorities said.
"We are responding to a report of an explosion at 23rd St. and 6t Avenue in Manhattan. We will update you w/more when we have it," Assistant Commissioner for Communication and Public Information at the New York City Police Department J Peter Donald tweeted.
He said the explosion occurred around 8:30 PM yesterday in the Chelsea neighbourhood, a busy residential and commercial area. Law enforcement authorities and emergency responders are
on the scene.
People in the neighborhood took to social media to report that the area was being cordoned off and restaurants and shops were being evacuated.
Donald said "several" injured have been transported to area hospitals. More details on the incident are awaited. "@NYPDnews & EMS on scene of apparent explosion on 23rd & 6th. Monitoring closely. Will provide updates w/ confirmed information," tweeted New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.
