The plane, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 had taken off from Kunming and was headed for Guangzhou when it crashed near Wuzhou city in the Guangxi region.
The number of casualties is not yet known, the news agency stated.
The state media CCTV said a "China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 plane carrying 133 people has crashed in Teng county Wuzhou, Guangxi, and caused a mountain fire."
Soon after the crash, a ball of fire could be seen emanating from the crash site. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the location, reported AFP.
Notably, shares of Boeing fell 6.8 per cent to $179.97 in pre-market US trading, Bloomberg reported. In late trading in Hong Kong, stock in Shanghai-based China Eastern fell 6.4 per cent. (HEADLINE POINT)
This is the first fatal accident involving a 737-800 plane since January 8, 2020, according to the Aviation Safety Network’s website.
According to FlightRadar, the China Eastern jet involved in the accident was six years old.
The crash comes at a time when Boeing 737 Max is preparing for its re-entry into commercial service in China. Boeing had flown a Max to its completion and delivery centre in China’s Zhoushan for the first time since the model received recertification being grounded following two crashes in October 2018 and March 2019, Bloomberg reported earlier this month.
The Boeing aircraft involved in Monday’s crash wasn’t a new-generation Boeing Max jet, reports said.
