New Delhi: The man responsible for the mass shooting in California reportedly shot himself as officers closed in, reported AP citing Los Angeles police. At least 10 people died on Saturday in a mass shooting during the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration in Los Angeles.
The man has been identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. Officials said that as police approached a van they had been tracking, one gunshot was heard within the van.
Ten individuals were murdered in a mass shooting late Saturday night in a community east of Los Angeles during a Lunar New Year party attended by hundreds of people, according to officials, news agency AFP reported.
According to authorities, the shooter opened fire at a dance establishment in Monterey Park when the local community was celebrating Lunar New Year. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Captain Andrew Meyers said deputies responded to emergency calls at 10:20 PM Saturday and saw individuals spilling out of the building.
Footage shared on social media showed rescue personnel transporting injured persons on stretchers to ambulances. The footage showed police guarding cordoned-off streets near the location of the shooting, which was alleged to have occurred at a dance club.
Tens of thousands of people had congregated earlier in the day for the two-day Lunar New Year event, which is one of Southern California's largest. According to the Los Angeles Times, Seung Won Choi, owner of a seafood BBQ restaurant near the incident, claimed three customers raced into his restaurant and urged him to shut the door.
