New Delhi: Britain has decided to strip the citizenship of Shamima Begum, a UK teenager who joined the Islamic State four years ago, and now wants to return to Britain with a newborn baby, for a better upbringing.

The family of the girl is disappointed with the order of depriving her of citizenship and are considering all legal options to challenge the decision,  her lawyer said on Twitter.

The story of Begum, which highlights the dilemma of European countries over whether to bar jihadists from returning home, or allowing them to return to face prosecution, has caught the attention of international media of late.

Her story:

Shamima Begum had joined the IS in Syria in the year 2015 along with two classmates.

In an interview to Sky News, the 19-year-old said that she fled to Syria and married “her husband”. She gave birth to two babies earlier, who apparently from illness and malnutrition.

She is currently lodged in a refugee camp in northeast Syria where she fled fighting in the east of the country along with hundreds of other people with links to IS, reports said.

At the weekend she gave birth to her third child, who she wants to raise in Britain. She asked the British authorities to show compassion by allowing her back in Britain to bring up the child. The authorities however decided to strip her of citizenship.

“No regret, had a good time”

Begum’s interview to Sky News created quite a ruffle on social media as she smirked through the camera and said she has no remorse whatsoever for joining IS.

She boasted she had a “good time” in Syria.

She claimed she “never did anything dangerous” and said that she cannot live in the refugee camp forever. She said the government should show compassion towards her.

When she was asked if she felt she made a mistake travelling to Syria, she said, she doesn’t regret because it changed her as a person and made her tougher. She said she would not find somebody like her husband back in the UK.

She said on the interview, she was just a housewife for the entire four years and never did anything dangerous.
