Nobel Laureate and  'banker to the poor' Muhammad Yunus, who will be the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, will return to his violence-hit homeland on Thursday. Yunus will then be sworn in as the head of the interim government. Yunus's name was finalised for the post on Tuesday after former PM Sheikh Hasina's ouster from Bangladesh.

Muhammad Yunus will land at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Yunus is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at 2:10 PM (Dhaka time) on Thursday.

The interim government will take oath at 8 PM on Thursday. As many as 15 members will take oath with Yunus at the head, said Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman.

Bangladesh descended into chaos as Prime Minister Hasina surreptitiously resigned and fled the country in a military aircraft while the army stepped in to fill the power vacuum by announcing an interim government.

The death toll in the anti-government protests in Bangladesh on Tuesday climbed to 440, with 100 more deaths reported after Sheikh Hasina fled the country, news agency PTI reported, citing local media. Efforts were on by the army to bring the situation under control in the violence-hit nation.

A day after being released from house arrest, former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, delivered a public speech after over 6.5 years as she addressed her party's rally at the capital's Naya Paltan via video link. During her first speech since she was set free after 2018, Zia said that "Bangladesh got independence from the fascist government" due to the "brave children who made the impossible possible."

"You have been praying for my health all this while. I am able to speak to you to due to the blessings of Allah. We have been able to get independence from this fascist government. I pay my obeisance to the brave ones who gave their lives," she said in the video message in Bangla.

Amid the violence, minorities are being attacked in the violence-hit country and Hindus are being allegedly attacked in several parts.  According to sources, Hindus are being attacked in the districts including Panchgarh, Dinajpur, Bogura, Rangpur, Sherpur Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, Mugra, Narail, West Jashore, Patuakhli, South-West Khulna, Central Narsingdi, Satkhira, Tangail, Feni Chittagong, North-West Lakkipur.

Despite the high death toll, there were signs of a return to normalcy on Tuesday, with police and army patrolling the streets, BDNews24.com news portal said and added that schools were reopened after a long period of closure due to protests against Hasina over a controversial job quota system.

The situation in Dhaka was largely calm on Tuesday after a day of unrest and a night of tension. Buses and other public transport were on the streets and traders were opening shops. Government vehicles were heading to offices. Many battery-run rickshaws plied the roads, it added.
