New Delhi: At least 32 people were killed and 85 people sustained injuries after two trains collided head-on in Greece on Tuesday, the fire brigade said as reported by the news agency Reuters. A train collision between the Greek cities of Athens and Thessaloniki has killed at least 26 people and injured 85, fire officials say.
"At least 26 people have been found dead so far," a fire services spokesman says as quoted by AFP earlier. He further said that rescue operations are still ongoing. According to Reuters, rescue workers were seen with torches in carriages looking for trapped passengers. In the footage shown by broadcaster SKAI, badly damaged derailed carriages can be seen with broken windows and thick plumes of smoke. The footage also shows debris scattered aross the road.
According to the governor of the Thessaly region, about 250 passengers were evacuated safely to Thessaloniki on buses, Reuters reported. "The collision was very strong," governor Konstantinos Agorastos told SKAI TV. The first four carriages of the passenger train had derailed, while the first two carriages were "almost completely destroyed", he added.
